Depakote Dosage and Administration:
Mania
These oral tablets are recommended with initial Depakote Dosage of 750 mg daily in divided doses. The maximum recommended Depakote Dosage is 60 mg/kg/day. Doctors may be increase the Depakote Dosage rapidly as possible to get the lowest therapeutic dose which produces the desired clinical effect or the desired range of plasma concentrations.
Epilepsy
DEPAKOTE is indicated as monotherapy and adjunctive therapy in complex partial seizures in adults (Depakote Dosage of 10 mg to 15 mg) and pediatric patients down to the age of 10 years, and in simple and complex absence seizures (Depakote Dosage of15 mg).
Complex Partial Seizures
For both adults and children above 10 years of age.
Monotherapy (Initial Therapy)
Patients should start therapy at Depakote Dosage of 10 to 15 mg/kg/day. The Depakote dosage should be increased by 5 to 10 mg/kg/week to achieve optimal clinical response.
Conversion to Monotherapy
Patients should initiate therapy at Depakote Dosage of 10 to 15 mg/kg/day. The Depakote dosage should be increased by 5 to 10 mg/kg/week to achieve optimal clinical response.
Adjunctive Therapy
DEPAKOTE may be added to the patient’s regimen at a Depakote Dosage of 10 to 15 mg/kg/day. The Depakote Dosage may be increased by 5 to 10 mg/kg/week to achieve optimal clinical response.
Simple and Complex Absence Seizures
The recommended initial Depakote Dosage is 15 mg/kg/day, increasing at one week intervals by 5 to 10 mg/kg/day until seizures are controlled or side effects preclude further increases.
Migraine
The recommended starting Depakote Dosage is 250 mg twice daily. Some patients may benefit from Depakote Dosage up to 1000 mg/day. In the clinical trials, there was no evidence that higher doses led to greater efficacy.
General Depakote Dosage Advice:
Dosing in Elderly Patient
The initial starting dose should be reduced in these elderly patients. Depakote dosage should be increased more slowly and with regular monitoring for fluid and nutritional intake, dehydration, somnolence, and other adverse events. Dose reductions or discontinuation of valproate should be considered in patients with decreased food or fluid intake and in patients with excessive somnolence.
Adverse Events (Dose-Related):
The frequency of adverse effects may be dose-related.
Depakote Side Effects
The common Depakote side effects found in patients are: Change in appetite; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; hair loss; headache; indigestion; nausea; stomach cramps or pain; trouble sleeping; vomiting; weakness; weight changes. Apart from this some severe conditions are also noticed in patience. Call your doctor immediately if you notice any kind of symptoms after taking the tablet.
